Foster Care Identity Theft
In other states, foster youth have too frequently been the victims of identity theft. While in Wisconsin we rank fairly low when it comes to the number of identity theft cases, we are concerned about the impact that this could have on foster youth. One case of identify theft is too many.
The Department of Children and Families has made major reforms to improve the lives and futures of foster children. In our work to help foster children succeed, we want to make sure that their first steps as independent adults are successful.
Any youth, who is in or has ever been in out-of-home care, can contact their casework if they suspect their identity has been stolen or our Youth Identity Theft hotline 608-266-9024 or e-mail dcfyouthidentitytheft@wisconsin.gov. We have also developed resources below specifically designed for foster youth:
- Foster Youth Identity Theft Brochure
- Foster Youth Identity Theft Tip Sheet - For Youth in Foster Care
- Foster Youth Identity Theft Tip Sheet - For Foster Care Coordinators
- Letter to Foster Youth About Identity Theft
